Wish Upon A Star is Live!
Hey everyone!
I plan to slowly but surely get some of my more polished projects up here, which will probably mean a lot of larp stuff for the time being. But I've decided to start with a game that's near and dear to my heart, Wish Upon A Star.
Wish Upon A Star isn't the first larp I've ever written, but it is the first one I wrote by myself, even if it's been heavily edited by friends and family at this point. Wish first ran back in 2017 at Dice Bubble, but the idea of it had been kicking around for at least three years prior. But I hadn't felt like I understood how to write larps back then, and even with my limited knowledge, I knew this one was gonna be a little complicated. I wanted big choices that had big affects but didn't lock anyone out future decisions they wanted to make. I liked the idea of character sheets that changed and was playing or hearing stories about a lot of amnesia games. And perhaps most importantly, I was a high school teen with way too many thoughts and feelings and very few people to share them with. And so, eventually, Wish Upon A Star was born.
I'm very proud of the way I was able to change the tone and emotional state of game as it goes on. It was very important to me that players at the start of the game could easily experience fun and whimsy, that it was only as the game went on that something more sinister and serious began to crop up. And don't get me wrong: that took a lot of trial and error. The Gamma run in particular was a tough learning curve, but I got a good amount of feedback from players much more familiar with game design and larps in general that helped me polish my ideas. I got my wonderful sister to bounce ideas off of and sanity check decisions. By 2019, I was very happy with what I had made. And, thanks to some friends in the community, the idea of boxing larps was starting to spread.
Obviously, it took some time for the idea to really stick. I started writing more games with more experienced larpers and worked on even more larp ideas independently - and that's just what was going on in that one hobby. Recently, I decided to bite the bullet and get Wish Upon A Star as polished and box-ready as I could. I wanted to make sure that anyone, larp veteran or newbie, could open my game and understand what was going on. Therefore, A Game Runner's Guide was my top priority. With thirty-five pages filled of explanations, I hope it's both informative and an easy read.
I hope you check out Wish Upon A Star - or some of the other amazing larps here on itch.io. Part of the reason I'm posting here is that there are a lot of awesome people in the larp community sharing some gems here.
Thanks for reading!
